Domestic Abuse Court Advocacy (DACA)
Available for women age 16+
This service is currently only available for cases being heard in Peterhead and Banff Sheriff Courts.
If you are involved in a domestic abuse incident which has been reported to police and is likely to proceed through the court process, we can provide personalised support throughout your journey. We will provide information about the court proceedings, offer personalised safety and risk advice, and be your voice within the criminal justice system, to ensure your views are heard and you receive the support you need.
The aim of the DACA is to support you to feel emotionally prepared for court, they will take the time needed to talk with you about your feelings and how the court case is impacting on you, including considering the safety needs of your children.
Our DACA service is led by a skilled worker who has extensive knowledge in this field who will take a trauma informed approach, understanding the concerns you may have about your safety and any other matters of concern you may have throughout this process. Your views will always be central to our risk assessment and safety planning.
A Domestic Abuse Court Advocate will:
- Provide a trauma informed service
- Explain the court process and what you should expect at each of the hearings
- Provide you with the outcome of the hearings in a timely manner
- Share your views with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal’s Service
- Advocate for protective orders such as bail conditions and non-harassment orders
- Support you to apply for special measures at court e.g. a video-link
- Discuss your risk and provide personalised safety planning in conjunction with you to improve your safety at court and at home.
- Support you to make connections with other agencies to enhance your safety and recovery.
