Help shape the future of Grampian Women’s Aid and make a lasting difference to the lives of women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

Grampian Women’s Aid is seeking an inspiring and strategic leader to join our Board of Trustees as Chair. This is an exciting voluntary opportunity for a woman with strong leadership skills and a passion for advancing the rights, safety and wellbeing of women and children.

As Chair, you will play a pivotal role in guiding our organisation through its next phase of development, providing leadership to our Board, supporting our Chief Executive, and ensuring the highest standards of governance across the charity.

This voluntary role requires approximately 6 to 8 hours per month, with Board meetings held every two months, either online or in person.

About Us

Grampian Women’s Aid (GWA) is a charity based in Aberdeen, providing information, support and safe accommodation for women and children experiencing domestic abuse across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire since 1978. Our vision is of a fair and equal society in which women, children and young people are fully included and are free from all forms of abuse, empowered with knowledge, skills and tools to live life to their full potential.

The Role

As Chair of the Board of Trustees, you will:

  • Provide strategic leadership to the Board and the organisation.
  • Ensure the charity remains focused on its vision, mission and values.
  • Lead the Board in delivering effective governance and oversight.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive and collaborative Board culture.
  • Act as a trusted partner and critical friend to the Chief Executive.
  • Support the development and delivery of the organisation’s strategic priorities.
  • Represent and champion Grampian Women’s Aid externally, helping to strengthen relationships and raise the profile of our work.

This is a unique opportunity to use your leadership skills and experience to support an organisation that has been making a difference to women’s lives for more than four decades.

Who We Are Looking For

We would particularly welcome applications from women who can bring:

  • Board or Governance Experience: Previous experience as a trustee, board member, committee member or senior leader.
  • Strategic Leadership: The ability to think strategically, guide organisational development and support effective decision-making.
  • Strong Communication and Influencing Skills: Confidence in facilitating constructive discussions, building relationships and acting as an ambassador for the organisation.
  • Commitment to Equality and Inclusion: A genuine commitment to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive organisation.
  • Passion for Our Mission: A strong desire to improve outcomes for women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

Previous experience as a Chair and/or board experience is welcomed but not essential. We are committed to supporting the successful candidate through a comprehensive induction and ongoing development.

Above all, we are looking for someone who shares our values, believes in our mission, and is excited by the opportunity to help lead our respected and impactful organisation.

If you are passionate about strategic leadership and want to help create lasting change, we would love to hear from you.
